Soak the basket and portafilter
WeeklyA basket that looks clean has oil in every one of its holes and around the rim where it meets the gasket. It changes the flow pattern before it changes the taste, so it shows up as channelling first.
What you need
- Cafiza or Puly Caff. A jug of hot water. A brush. A towel.
What goes wrong
- Soaking the whole portafilter, handle and all. Under-rinsing. Taking a wire brush to a precision basket and enlarging the holes. Skipping the rim, which is exactly where the gasket seals.
The procedure
- Dissolve 3g of detergent in 500ml of hot water, in a jug deep enough to cover the basket and the portafilter head.
